According to the Business Day, the Medicines and Related Substances Amendment Bill which was to give the power of approving and regulating medicines to the minister of health is to be altered so that the regulatory control will rest solely in the hands of the Health Products Regulatory Authority, a body that will be replacing the current Medicines Control Council.

This development, announced by the health portfolio committee chair, James Ngculu, comes after vehement protest from civil society, doctors and pharmaceutical companies as giving the minister this power would have allowed potential political interference in the regulation of medicines.
